The Maori Tour Cultural - Te Puke
Depart port with your experienced Māori step-on guide, and travel through the beach and harbour towns of Tauranga and Mount Maunganui, on your way into the Māori Cultural world of the Waitaha Māori people.
To set the scene, you will be taken to the top of the nearby Papamoa Hills where you will be able to see the local Māori history carved into the hilltops in the form of ancient fortification sites.
These form part of the Papamoa Hills Archaeological Complex which is NZ’s largest historic archaeological site.
After viewing the panoramic views of the Bay of Plenty including the twin cities of Tauranga and Mount Maunganui, the beautiful coastline and the vast area of kiwifruit orchards, you will head to the meeting place (marae) of the Waitaha iwi (tribe), 15 minutes away.
At the marae you will be formally welcomed into the meeting house, to understand the how the Māori people revere their ancestors (tipuna).
Following the formal welcome you will be invited to the wharekai (eating house) for a delicious morning tea, and be treated to a Māori Cultural performance by iwi members, consisting of song, poi, weaponry, haka (war dance).
Leaving the marae you will travel to the Te Puke township, known around the world as the Kiwifruit Capital of The World. A stop here, by beautiful park entrance and adjacent to the Main St, you will be welcomed by volunteer hostesses. who will provide information about the Main St, less than 50 meters away. Some time is available to browse the shops, talk to the locals, have a beer or a glass of wine, or just visit the local boutique art gallery in the old Police Station complete with outdoor cells!
The visit to the town is followed by the trip back to the ship.
